Stephen Hawking: Another Example of Life Struggling
The time was World War II. The whole of Europe was involved in this war. Germany Hitler is dropping bombs on London to devour Europe. At that time, a young man named Frank Hawking was married to a young woman named Isobel Hawking. Soon after the marriage, a child was born to this medical couple, who was named Stephen William Hawking. Thinking about the safety of the child in this state of war, they moved to Oxford.
Stephen William Hawking started to grow up slowly. At the same time, he went to school and college. Even though he passed all the classes with fairly good marks, he still could not get any significant success. But it was pure love for science. His friends sometimes called him Einstein because of his thought, spirit, and enthusiasm for science. But father Frank Hawking wanted his son to be a doctor.
After that, Stephen Hawking appeared at Oxford University with a strong desire to study at the university. But math was not in his luck. So he was forced to choose physics. In 1959 he started his studies at Oxford. When he was only 17 years old. But towards the end of Oxford in 1962, Hawking noticed physical abnormalities in himself. It was seen that he was sometimes falling while going up and down. You can’t speak normally like before.

The year is 1963. On the occasion of Christmas, Stephen Hawking went to the service house when he got a break from Oxford. This abnormality of the son is seen by the parents. They were worried. None of them were prepared for what the doctor told them when he was taken to the hospital. After examining Stephen Hawking, the doctor said that Hawking was diagnosed with an incurable disease called a motor neuron. Which is called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Historically, patients with this disease can live up to 2 years. However, unusually only two to three percent of individuals were recorded to survive for a maximum of 3 years. There was no record of people living longer than this.
Disappointed parents started counting the hours of their 21-year-old son’s death after hearing the words of the doctors. When they could not save their son even with everything, they were giving up mentally. Stephen Hawking did not just give up. Stephen Hawking started to keep his mind alive without listening to the words of the doctors. He removed the sure burial of his body from his thoughts and continued his studies with renewed enthusiasm. Then Stephen Hawking received an honors degree from Oxford. Moved to Cambridge to study for Ph.D. There he met a woman named Jane World. He married Jane World in 1965.
Many have won the Nobel in science. But among them, seven families have to be told separately. These families have taken home the Nobel Prize for two generations. By reading about them, I think you will be highly motivated. To read, go to this link: https://gutibuz.com/science/seven-families-of-nobel-prize-laureates/
Gradually his physical condition continued to deteriorate. His physical ability continued to decline. At one point he had to start walking on crutches. His mouth started to get more involved. No one except family and friends could understand him. At one time, the ability to write by hand also disappeared. And I had to confine myself to a wheelchair.
Even after all this, his brain did not stop. Despite everything, he kept his brain active. Sitting in a wheelchair, he kept himself engrossed in the thought of science. He further increased his studies. Physicist Warner Israel compared Stephen Hawking’s efforts to Mozart’s. Because Mozak, who is visually impaired, used to compose an entire symphony in his head.
With hard work and overwhelming mental strength, Stephen Hawking obtained his Ph.D. degree in cosmology in 1966. At the same time, Roger Penrose jointly researched the absolute point of gravity. Later, a research paper was also published. Which was titled, “The Absolute Point and Space-Time Geometry”. Stephen Hawking received the prestigious Adams Award in the same year. Then in 1974, he predicted black hole radiation which is known as Hawking radiation. Mathematical Stephen Hawking shows that black holes are not as black as we say they are. A small amount of light comes out of it as radiation. Which physicists discovered several years ago. Then Stephen William Hawking joined Cambridge as Lucasian Professor in 1979. The position in which the scientist Newton was once employed. At this Cambridge, Stephen Hawking taught for the next 30 years of his life.
In 1985, with his wife Jane, Stephen went to the European nuclear research center on the border of France-Switzerland. There again came a setback in his life. There, Stephen Hawking was seriously affected by pneumonia. Stephen Hawking faced death again. He was put on life support. Once the condition worsened, the doctors gave up all hope and decided to withdraw life support from him. But life support was not removed from him at the request of his wife Jane. However, to provide artificial respiration, he was forced to make a hole in his throat and perform a tracheotomy. As a result, Stephen Hawking became speechless forever. However, after fighting with death for some time, Stephen Hawking recovered. At that time, his means of communication with others was a pair of eyebrows. He used to maintain communication by moving his eyebrows and pointing to the words written on the paper.
But fate caught him a bit this time. Stephen Hawking got a computer program called Equalizer in 1986. This program was created by Walter Oltoz, the head of a company called World Plus. Oltoze’s mother-in-law also suffered from the motor neurons. That’s why Walter made it. With the help of this program, Stephen Hawking was able to communicate with others faster than before. This program is used to press a switch with the finger and select the necessary words from a large number of phrases and synthesize them into a mechanical voice. However, to do this, Hawking had to sit in front of the computer in a wheelchair. If the computer was not in front of him, he could not keep the communication like this.

Stephen Hawking got a solution to that problem. Computer engineer David, the first husband of Hawking’s one-time nurse and reading wife Elaine Mason, built a small computer and installed it in Hawking’s wheelchair. As a result, Hawking was able to maintain uninterrupted communication from anywhere. Through this, Hawking could write 15 words per minute using his hand. whose speech could be heard in a mechanical voice by synthesizer. And this is how he wrote the book called “The Brief History of Time”. Which broke all previous records and remained on the bestseller list for 237 consecutive weeks.
But misfortune seems to say the same. At one point he lost the ability to move his fingers. This time, Hawking pointed the finger at fate. In 2005, he learned to operate a computer by moving his forehead muscles. And thus he could write one word per minute. A software that could predict the next word was then added to the computer in Hawking’s wheelchair. As a result, Stephen Hawking was able to express himself somewhat well again. Professor Stephen Hawking to prepare lectures for students with such difficulty. He retired from Cambridge in 2009. In the same year, he was awarded the highest civilian award of the United States, the “Presidential Medal of Freedom”.
In this way, for 50 consecutive years, Stephen Hawking has repeatedly ignored the impossibility just by mental strength. He broke all the records of the doctors. In this regard, a professor of neurology at the University of Miami in the United States is like, “The way Hawking fought against his physical illness and won, he should get the Nobel Prize, even if he excludes his contribution to scientific research.” But even with so many scientific discoveries, he did not get the Nobel Prize in his life. However, the honor he received, no other Nobel laureate except Einstein received.
Despite all his physical disabilities, he is still remarkable for the way in which he was associated with studies and theoretical research on the strength of mental strength alone. Regardless of his physical disability, any science lover remembers him as the most talented and influential scientist after Einstein. However, his list of achievements and achievements is also very long.
He was also an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Life Member of the Political Academy of Science. He passed away on March 14, 2018 at the age of 76 after suffering from motor neuron disease for a long period of more than 50 years.
Stephen William Hawking is another name of inspiration, encouragement and life struggle for millions of people in the world who created all such other examples.
